Dr. Steven Rude, Ph.D. Neuroscience

Steven Rude, PhD, is a core faculty member in the Department of Basic Sciences at Bastyr University. Dr. Rude holds a BA in Human Biology for the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University.
Dr. Rude has held postdoctoral positions at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, and the University of Washington Primate Center in Seattle studying visual-vestibular sensorimotor integration and ocular motor adaptation. He has worked with Seattle Children’s Hospital in Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology, and has enjoyed teaching general science and Allied Health classes at various community colleges and universities around Seattle.
Professional interests include Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and monitoring eye movements associated with different physical and mental states. Personal interests include commuting to work by kayak or bike, and spending time with family.
Dr. Rude believes in approaching all problems with a beginner’s mind, maintaining non-judgment. He often advises students to notice their breathing, and offers the acronym ROAR as a way to approach their challenging lives: Relax, Observe, Accept, and Respond appropriately.
